Linus the Beagle has firmly entrenched himself in our family. He is part of our family now. Rescued after being found on a camp trail, he found his way to our home and the rest as you might say is doggy history. After his first vet visit where I stayed in the car while the vet examined Linus inside the clinic, the vet called me to update me on Linus’s health. He ended his update with the phrase, “Linus is quite the character.” I told my husband this and we looked at each other and each ran to our respective search engine to see if that was code in vet speak. We both came back and reported we couldn’t find any sites that said that was a catch phrase, but my husband is still convinced there’s an underlying message to that phrase “quite the character.”
And we’ve discovered that Linus is in fact quite the character. He’s part beagle, part Basset, and each of us thinks he’s part something else, too. I wouldn’t be surprised if he has a little bit of bulldog in him (but then again considering my alma mater is the University of Georgia, that could be wishful thinking). But a character in a sweetheart kind of way. How so? I’m glad you asked!
Blanket hog. Linus loves blankets. He even came with a blue blanket (in October). He will pick up a blanket in his mouth and take it to whatever room I’m in. He loves curling up on the blankets, and he has no problem putting one or two of them in his mouth and just falling asleep. He especially loves those thick, Sherpa throws that are thick and wooly. Normally I wash the blankets and store them in the summer, especially seeing as it reached 106 degrees Fahrenheit the other day with the heat index. And yet, he loves his blankets. Just like I love hot cocoa in the summer and ice cream in the winter.
Walks. Linus loves his daily walks although I’ve had to cancel the ones for the past couple of days due to heat issues. He loves taking different routes in the subdivision and especially loves it when kids notice him. He’s quite the ladies’ dog and he especially loves it when someone pets him. He’ll hold his tail a little straighter and he smiles.
Chilling out. Linus is not the world’s most active dog. Quite the opposite. If you remember hobbits from Lord of the Rings and elevensies and their other meals, Linus is like that with naps. It’s currently time for his elevensies nap. But sometimes it’s a good reminder in the evening that it’s time to put away the electronics and enjoy some relaxation time. Last night my husband and I watched Death in Paradise. We normally only limit ourselves to one a night. Linus was on my lap and I was petting him at the end of an episode, so we watched an extra episode and chilled out together.
And now we’re starting to have our family stories that involve Linus. The other night we took him to DQ where my son was working his last day there as he’s about to leave for college. My husband ordered Linus a glizzard (ice cream with a hot dog in it). Linus loved it, and we now have another Linus story.
Do you have any pets? If so, what type of animal and what is something your pet taught or is teaching you?
